Steamboat Springs had an approximate population of 10,607 (2003 Census). Routt County’s overall estimated population is 21,366.
Elevation
Altitude within Steamboat Springs is approximately 6,795 feet above sea level. However, surrounding mountains rise to more than 10,500 feet above sea level.
Summer Climate
Summer is relished for its relatively mild temperatures with late-afternoon thundershowers and cool evenings. July is typically our warmest month with an average summer high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual precipitation in the form of snow and rain is 25 inches. People come for the winters and stay for the summers!
Winter Climate
January is typically our coldest month, with an average high temperature of 29 degrees. Average snowfall is 173 inches downtown and 310 inches at the Steamboat Ski Area. Steamboat is known as “Ski Town USA” and the home of “champagne powder,” – come see for yourself!

City sales tax of 4% is charged on retail purchases, including groceries. An additional 1% accommodations tax is levied on all short-term lodging (30 days or less), with revenues dedicated to above-ground amenities that benefit the recreation and lodging industries. The 0.5% tax collected by the schools is specifically earmarked for allocation among technology, capital projects and educational excellence.
Property Tax

Property values are reevaluated every odd year and are applied to the two following years. On residential property, this is applied to 7.95 percent of actual value. The exact mill levy is determined by the tax area.
Medical Services
The Yampa Valley Medical Center (YVMC) opened in November 1999 and is designated as a Level III Trauma Center and has a Level II nursery for critical care of newborns. This 29-bed, outpatient-centered hospital offers high-tech care with a personal touch, including 24-hour emergency care, surgery, maternity suites and whirlpool baths, a full range of diagnostic imaging and laboratory services, plus physical therapy, cardiac rehab and SportsMed. The Doak Walker Extended Care Center opened its doors at the YVMC together with the GrankdKids Child Care Center. The Doak Walker Extended Care Center offers skilled nursing care for elderly and convalescing adults in an intergenerational setting. The Haven is a 20-resident assisted living facility located in Hayden, 22 miles west of Steamboat Springs. The home-like facility assists people who have some degree of independence. (970)276-4484.
Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association provides well-child care, immunizations, home health care, grief support, care for the terminally ill, handicapped clinics, prenatal care and a neurology clinic. (970)879-1632.
